Youth through education in the fight against human trafficking in Nis
11. january 2023.
A team of 7 young people, gathered in the Center for Girls almost a year ago, performed 21 educational theaters in 2022 as part of the project "Protecting Youth in Nis from the Human Trafficking", in ten high schools and one elementary school in Nis. Six hundred and nine young people attended the theaters and had the opportunity to actively participate.
The schools that were part of this story are: School of Law and Business, First Nis High School “Stevan Sremac”, High School “Bora Stankovic”, School of Fashion and Beauty, High School “May 9th", Hospitality and Tourism School, Trade School, ETS ,”Mija Stanimirovic", School of Economics, Traffic Technical School, ”February 12th" and Primary School "Tzar Constantine".
After the scenes, young people in the audience could ask the characters about what they saw, what they didn't understand, while the characters gave information through their answers about what human trafficking is, how to recognize it and protect oneself.
At the end, they could write what they’ve learned through this theater or what they changed their minds about. Here are some interesting answers:
I changed my mind about:
- Interpersonal relations, from now on I will be careful who I trust and until now I did not give much importance to human trafficking.
- Trafficking in people and information we encounter.
- I learned a lot about human trafficking. Until now, I didn't know it was such a serious topic.
I will be more interested now.
- That human trafficking is more common than we think.
- That you should always check ads in full.
I learned:
- I will be more careful because I was not aware until now that I could have gone through that and of course I will do my best to prevent or help anyone.
- To recognize human trafficking.
- I learned a lot about human trafficking today that I didn't pay attention to before.
- That we should not have boundless trust in a guy or a girl, that we should be careful with whom we are in a relationship.
- Who can I contact if this happens and how can I make sure it doesn't happen.
In front of their peers, educational plays were performed by: Mina Zikic, Jana Tosic, Nina Miletic, Lena Krasic, Mila Djordjevic, Nikola Pavlovic and Stefan Bogicevic. The educational theater was recorded and you can watch some parts of it on our social networks (Instagram, Facebook and Tik Tok).
For the teaching staff in these secondary schools, one interactive lecture was held, led by Tatjana Nikolic. Through 10 lectures, 125 professors, psychologists and pedagogues saw short video clips created during this project, which represent parts of the theater that their students saw live. Also, Tatjana spoke with the teaching staff about what human trafficking is, how to recognize it and protect themselves and their students. Through the discussion during the lecture, some of them expressed their desire to continue cooperation on this topic.
Media conference on the occasion of the end of the project "Protecting youth in Nis from human trafficking"
28. december 2022.
The Center for Girls held a media conference in the Media and Reform Center, on the occasion of the successful completion of the project "Protect Youth in Nis from Human Trafficking", supported by the US Embassy.
Two high school students, Mina and Nina, who were part of the team that performed educational theaters about human trafficking in Nis high schools, shared their impressions. They talked about how much it meant to them and what they got through participating in the project. Three short clips showing part of the activity are shown. The project coordinator, Marija Virijevic, spoke about the results, success and importance of the activity.
Nina said that the most beautiful thing she would single out is "certain questions that the children from the audience asked and then you actually realize that they wouldn't have asked you something like that if they didn't want to hear you and weren't eager to learn something new", and Mina said that she thinks it is important that children in schools "received information in an interesting way, through acting, because that way they will remember more than through a regular lecture".

Educational theaters in secondary schools in Nis
24. june 2022.
One hundred and seventy young people from secondary schools in Niš increased their knowledge about the prevention of human trafficking through five educational forum theaters.
Theaters for peers were performed by Mila, Nina, Stefan, Mina, Aleksa, Lena and Jana, who underwent training on human trafficking and educational forum theater, held within the project "Protecting young people in Niš from human trafficking", which is supported by the US Embassy.
Educational theaters were held in 4 secondary schools (twice in the "Stevan Sremac" High School and one each in the "Law and Business School", "Economic School" and "School of Fashion and Beauty"). After watching the scenes, the audience had the opportunity to ask questions to the theater characters. Many good questions were asked, many new things were learned, and students left comments about what they learned and whether they changed their minds about something.
Some of the comments of the students who attended the theater performance:
First of all, I learned tol inform myself about where and with whom I am going, especially if it is about leaving my own country.
I've learned who to call when that happens.
I learned that human trafficking is no joke and that you should be careful.
I learned that there is a phone number of Astra, that I can call if I am in any similar danger.
I changed my mind about relationships.
I changed my mind about social media and people.
I changed my mind about people, especially those who are capable of doing something like human trafficking.
I changed my mind about everything on the internet - exchange, work, etc.

They learned how to create characters and scenes, how to answer questions from the audience so that they could transfer the knowledge about human trafficking that they had previously acquired in human trafficking training, and how to develop and improve their acting and educating skills.
In a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere, with good fellowship and dedicated work, they gained a lot of knowledge and skills, strengthened their friendships, connected and shared experience.
