“WOMEN’S CEMETERY” PERFORMANCE IN 6 CITIES IN THE COUNTRY’S EAST

Activists of the Center for Girls and activists of several organizations from Eastern Serbia performed “Women’s Cemetery” in 6 cities – Majdanpek, Bor, Zaječar, Negotin, Knjaževac and Požarevac.

Since the beginning of 2024, 17 femicides have been committed in Serbia, and it is necessary to work on raising public awareness of this problem.

On this occasion, we spoke with our fellow citizens and distributed pamphlets and leaflets with information on whom women in a situation of violence can contact, as well as the free telephone line of the Network of Women Against Violence, which is also staffed by consultants from the Center for Girls. Leaflets were also distributed with the point of violence and the terms fascism, racism, militarism, chauvinism, sexism and misogyny.

The performance was performed as part of the 16 Days of Activism campaign, through the project “Let’s stop the killing of women – A step forward in the fight against femicide”, supported by the Reconstruction Foundation – Women’s Fund and through the global campaign One billion stands up against violence against women.

“16 days of activism against violence against women” is a global, worldwide campaign marked by 1,700 organizations in over 100 countries of the world. The campaign begins on November 25, the International Day against Violence against Women, and ends on December 10, the International Human Rights Day.

One billion stands up against violence against women” is the largest action in the history of international movements against violence against women. The action was launched in 2013 by the playwright, writer and activist V (previously Eve Ensler). This action is a reaction to the worrying statistics of the United Nations that 1 out of 3 women are beaten, raped or psychologically abused during their lifetime. As there were 7 billion people living in the world at that time, this meant that over a billion women experienced some form of violence. With the current world population of 8 billion, that number is unfortunately even higher.
