Statement by the Center for Girls – Condemnation of Violence Against a Female Taxi Driver
The Center for Girls strongly condemns the brutal violence against a 27-year-old female taxi driver, which, according to the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Prokuplje, includes rape and robbery.
This case once again confirms that violence against women is not an isolated incident, but a serious social problem that requires an urgent and systemic response.
It is particularly alarming that the woman was attacked while performing her job, which further highlights the insecurity women face on a daily basis, even in public spaces.
We call on the competent institutions to process this case efficiently, responsibly, and without minimizing the severity of the criminal acts, as well as to ensure full protection and support for the victim.
We also call on taxi associations and transport providers to urgently implement additional protective measures for their employees, especially women, including improving safety protocols, introducing clear procedures for high-risk situations, and implementing technical solutions that can enhance safety during rides.
As an organization that has been working for 28 years on the protection of women’s human rights, we emphasize the necessity of continuous efforts in violence prevention, education, and the development of systems that guarantee women safety and dignity.
We stand in solidarity with the victim and offer her our full support.
No woman should be exposed to violence – not at work, not on the street, and not in her own home.
