Unpaind domestic labor of women – street action

Over 2,000 citizens saw a street action about the unpaid domestic work of the Center for Girls. In total, 400 leaflets were distributed to citizens with information on what unpaid domestic work is, why it should be recognized and paid, and what its value would be if it were paid.

Many passers-by stopped, talked to us and gave supportive comments. There were also a few negative ones, but mostly the citizens showed that they recognize the importance of the action.
The unpaid work of women in the household accounts for over a fifth of the economic output in Serbia. The question arises as to what is the total percentage of that product taken up by women’s unpaid work outside the household.

This work is recognized by the Rulebook on the methodology for calculating unpaid domestic work and the Law on Gender Equality, which is currently threatened by attempts to challenge its constitutionality. In order for women’s unpaid domestic work to become paid, it needs to be recognized by the Laws on Labor, Disability and Pension Insurance, as well as for the state budget to be adapted to the needs of women citizens.

The “(IN)VISIBLE – Let’s recognize the value of unpaid domestic labor of women” campaign, through which a street action was carried out, is supported by the Jelena Šantić Foundation with the “Link Change: Digital and Creative Activism at Work” program, within the „Empower Future: Cultivating with Future Forge Human Rights Leadership Initiative“, supported by the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
